M.C., B.Sc.; M.A. (Oxon.) : Lieutenant, 18th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in A.A.M.C. in August, 1915, transferred to Infantry early in 1916, joining 18th Battn. in France 30th August and serving in all important engagements, including Somme, Ypres, Villers- Bretonneux and Hindenburg Line until the Armistice, being adjutant from 8th January, 1917. Demobilised in England, 30th January, 1920, later returning to Australia. Promoted second-lieutenant, 23rd October, 1916; lieutenant, 29th January, 1917. Awarded M.C. 3rd June, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Rhodes Scholar, 1916. Headmaster, Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. Later at New College, Oxford.
