Book of Remembrance entry

C.B., C.M.G., M.A., LL.B. Major-General, General Officer Commanding, 2nd Australian Division, A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. At the outbreak of War was Chief of General Staff A.M.F. Appointed in Australia to command 1st Australian Division 20th May, 1915, to succeed Sir William Bridges who had been mortally wounded. Arriving at Anzac, 24th June, was in command until 26th July when sent to Egypt to organize and command 2nd Australian Division, remaining with it in Gallipoli, Egypt and France until 28th December, 1916, and returning to Australia, A.I.F. appointment terminated 29th April, 1917. Promoted brigadier-general, 20th May, 1915, and major-general, 22nd June. Made a C.B. in 1917 for services in Gallipoli and France, and awarded Montenegrin Order of Danilo. A.M.F. : Commandant, Royal Military College of Australia, Duntroon, and Inspector General, 1917. Early education at Cranleigh School, Surrey, and Sydney High School.
