Book of Remembrance entry

D.S.O., Arts (e) : Major, 54th and 2nd Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting in January, 1915, and sailing with 5th Reinforcements, 13th April, joined 2nd Battn. at Gallipoli as second-lieutenant 19th June. Commanded platoon at Lone Pine and A Coy. during the Evacuation, taking charge of C party (the last to leave). Transferring to 54th Battn. on formation, took part in the Desert March, Tel-el-Kebir to Moascar. Commanded A Coy. at Fromelles in July, 1916, 14th Brigade raiding party at Fleurbaix in August and A Coy. on the Somme 1916-17, being wounded at Bullecourt 15th May, 1917, while repulsing Prussian Guard attack. Returned to Australia 14th November. Promoted lieutenant, 7th August, 1915; captain, April, 19 16; major, 24th April, 1917. Decorated D.S.O.* by H.M. the King at Aldershot 27th July, 1917, for gallantry at Bullecourt. Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Rosetta Academy, Belfast. Later at Adelaide School of Mines. * Despite heavy barrage and artillery bombardment he handled the situation with great skill and courage. Although wounded he refused to leave the line until the attack had been repulsed and the position secured.
