Book of Remembrance entry

M.C., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Major, 5th Divisional Engineers, 5th and 15th Field Coys., and 17th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Enlisting 16th April, 1915, and sailing as second-lieutenant, 9th August, landed at Anzac with 17th Battn. reinforcements and transferred to 5th Field Coy. Engineers, 3rd November, firing mines at The Nek, Russell''s Top, at 3.20 a.m. 20th December, just before Anzac was finally evacuated. Remained with 5th Coy. (renamed 8th) east of Canal till June, 1916, and, crossing to France, transferred to 15th Coy., and on 3rd September, 1917, to 5th Divisional Engineers, H.Q., serving in all engagements until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 5th February, 19 16; captain, 6th May, 19 17; major, 9th December, 1918. Awarded M.C. 3rd June, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Fort St. High School.
